You Know What To Do—So What’s Stopping You?

You Know What To Do - So What's Stopping You Blog

Why You Know What to Do But Still Don’t Do It

Have you ever had one of those moments where you know exactly what you should be doing…

  • You know you should exercise.
  • You know you should make that phone call.
  • You know you should start that business.
  • You know you should finish that project.
  • You know you should stop procrastinating.
  • You even know how to do it.

But somehow… you still don’t do it. And then you ask yourself:

“Why can’t I just do what I know I need to do?”

Well, here’s the thing.

The problem usually isn’t a lack of knowledge. It’s the gap between knowing and doing.

Because if you understand what’s happening between the thought “I should do this” and the action “I’m actually doing it,” you can begin to change it.

KNOWING IS NOT THE SAME AS DOING

Let’s start with something really important.

‘Knowledge doesn’t automatically create behaviour.’

  • You can know that exercise is good for you and still avoid the gym.
  • You can know that procrastination is holding you back and still procrastinate.
  • You can know that you need to change your career and still stay in the same job.
  • You can know exactly what you need to do in your business and still spend the day doing everything except the thing that matters.

Why? – Because human behaviour isn’t driven by knowledge alone.

It’s influenced by your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, focus, motivation and the meaning you attach to the situation.

And this is where NLP becomes really interesting. Because NLP looks at the relationship between our internal experience and our external behaviour.

  • What are you thinking?
  • What are you focusing on?
  • What meaning are you giving something?
  • What are you saying to yourself?

And importantly…

what state are you in when you make the decision to act?

AWARENESS

The first MINDFiT principle I want you to consider is awareness.

Because before you can change a behaviour, you need to become aware of what is actually happening.

Let’s say you have decided: “Tomorrow I’m going to get up early and go for a run.”

The alarm goes off. And immediately you think: “I’m tired.” Then: “I’ll go tomorrow.”

Then: “I’ve had a busy week.”

And before you know it, you’ve hit snooze button. Now here’s the interesting part. You may think the problem was that you lacked motivation.

But what actually happened? There was a sequence.

Trigger → thought → emotional response → behaviour → result.

The alarm was the trigger.

The thought was “I’m too tired.”

That thought creates an emotional and physical response. Your focus shifts toward discomfort.

And then the behaviour follows.

You hit snooze button. The problem wasn’t that you didn’t know you should exercise. You already knew.

The problem occurred in the process between knowing and doing.

That’s why awareness is so important. Start noticing your patterns. Ask yourself:

“What happens just before I don’t do what I said I was going to do?”

That question alone can reveal a lot.
