What if I told you that being the smartest person in the room doesn’t necessarily make you the most successful?
You can have a high IQ. You can be highly educated. You can have incredible technical skills and knowledge. But if you can’t manage your emotions…
Then intelligence alone may not take you very far.
And this is where Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, becomes so important. Because IQ can help you understand a problem. But EQ can help you deal with the problem, deal with yourself, and deal with other people.
IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is generally associated with cognitive abilities such as reasoning, problem-solving, memory and learning.
These are incredibly valuable skills. But knowing what to do and actually being able to do it are two very different things.Think about someone who knows they should stay calm during a difficult conversation…
…but becomes angry.
Someone who understands the importance of healthy relationships…
…but constantly reacts defensively. Or someone who knows exactly what they need to do to achieve their goals…but procrastinates because they feel overwhelmed, anxious or uncertain.
The problem isn’t necessarily a lack of intelligence. It’s often a lack of emotional regulation and self-awareness.
Emotional intelligence gives us the ability to recognise what is happening internally—and then choose how we respond. And that ability can have a huge impact on our decisions, relationships and results.
One of the most important aspects of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Self-awareness means being able to recognise your emotions, thoughts, triggers and behavioural patterns.
For example:
That’s awareness.
But emotional intelligence doesn’t stop there. The next question becomes:
What am I going to do with that emotion? Because emotions are information.
They can tell us something important—but they don’t always tell us what action to take…
So, WHY does emotional intelligence really matter more than IQ?
Intelligence without emotional awareness can have significant limitations. Because ultimately, your ability to navigate life isn’t determined only by how much you know.
It’s also influenced by how well you understand yourself, how effectively you manage your emotions, and how well you connect with other people.
IQ may help you get into the room – EQ can determine what happens once you’re there.
Because when you change the way you understand yourself, you can begin to change the way you respond to the world. – David Wright
